Makoto Shinkai is a legendary director, known for giving the world some of the best-animated films, including Weathering With You, and Kimi no Na wa (Your Name). Makoto’s new film, Suzume no Tojimari has been released in Japan, and currently , Shinkai’s most successful film in Japan, surpassing both Weathering With You, and Kimi no Na was.

In order to promote the film, the director did an interview with Weekly Playboy from Shueisha where he mainly talked about his new film, Suzume no Tojimari (Suzume’s door locking), however, he revealed something about Your Name, which caught the attention of Netizens .

Makoto Shinkai commented that how old-fashioned erotic humour has become. He was referring to a scene from Your Name where protagonists Taki Tachibana (boy) and Mitsuha Miyamizu (girl) exchange bodies, and when Taki wakes up a girl, he touches his ( her?) breasts, apparently massaging them. Although the scene was supposed to be a comedy, the director believes it will not go unnoticed in the modern era and will definitely receive some backlash.

I don’t have any intention of intentionally changing my style, but the age’s acceptance of entertainment has changed a lot, hasn’t it? For example, “What is your name? The year after the release of the film, the “# The MeToo movement” took place in the film world, and the mood changed in various ways.

“What is your name? If it were now, the scene where (Tachibana) Taki massages Mitsuha’s breasts, where her body changes every time she wakes up, would be scrapped. It was a dream, and in the first place, it was my body, so I used the tool to say that there was no problem, but the current audience would have judged that it would not be accepted.

So from now on, I also have to worry about what people will think every time Kimi no Na wa (Your Name) airs on TV, like the “Friday Road Show” (laughs). So much has changed in just six years what is and is not an allowed expression in anime.

It appears that Shinkai is aware of what has occurred on social media in the past few years, so it is clear why he chooses not to take risks, especially given that his films are international in scope, and not only meant for Japanese audiences. According to Makoto Shinkai, such a scene would be considered controversial now because of how viewers’ thinking has grown in the six years since Your Name’s premiere.

Although Suzume no Tojimari is yet to be released outside of Japan, fans should not expect this kind of humor in this film. Nonetheless, the film has been doing really well at the box office. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever which has been breaking box office records, wasn’t able to dethrone Suzume no Tojimari in Japan.
