HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) – The World’s Largest Truck Convoy made its trek through Hastings and into Grand Island Saturday.

Many of the truck drivers weren’t alone on their journey this year either.

Forty-four truckers departed from the Adams County Fairgrounds Saturday morning, many of them with Nebraska Special Olympic athletes along for the ride to the Bosselman Travel Center.

The convoy has been a hit for many years, but due to COVID-19 the athletes weren’t allowed to travel with the truck drivers for the past couple of years.

This year, athletes like Cindy Hemberger are happy for the return of the ride along.

“About the whole convoy experience—I like getting in the trucks and driving them just to see what they do and how they do it,” Hemberger said.

Jay Woodard, a truck driver for Walmart, joined in on the convoy festivities for his ninth year.

Woodard noted, there’s something that keeps him coming back every time.

“To know that they, they’re… having more fun than we are, and we’re having a whole lot of fun so, it’s just really nice to see the smiles on their faces,” he said.

Hastings Police Department, Adams County Sheriff’s Office, Hall County Sheriff’s Office and Nebraska State Patrol officers showed up to the event and also helped with traffic control during the convoy.
