For Planned Parenthood

The Planned Parenthood Northern California Action Fund is holding an event Friday from 5 to 8 pm at Septentrio Winery, 650 Sixth St. in Arcata.

There will be live music from the SoHum Girls band and an information table focusing on CA Prop 1. Septentrio Winery will donate 10% of drink proceeds to support the work of the PPNorCal Action Fund.

The PPNorCal Action Fund works to protect safe and legal access to Planned Parenthood services and to advocate for laws and representatives that support comprehensive sexual and reproductive health care.

Pulled pork dinner

The McKinleyville Teen Center for the Boys & Girls Club of the Redwoods will host a “drive-through” pulled pork dinner Friday from 5 to 7 pm

Tickets are $15 each and can be purchased at the Eureka Teen Center and the McKinleyville Teen Center. Dinner will include pulled pork sandwich, coleslaw, fruit salad and a dessert item. For more information, call 707-441-1030.

Book sale

The Ink People Center for the Arts, 627 Third St., is throwing a “Big Art Book Sale” on Friday from 5:30 to 8:30 pm and Saturday from noon to 3 pm Books are priced $5 at $10 a bag.

online auction

Local mystery author Lisa Brackmann is helping to organize Mystery Loves Democracy (www.MysteryLovesDemocracy.com), an online auction to benefit Fair Fight Action, which works to promote free and fair elections nationwide.

The auction runs through 5 pm Saturday. The Mystery Loves Democracy Zoom-a-thon will count down the last two hours with Fair Fight Action’s Executive Director Cianti Stewart-Reid discussing the organization’s efforts and author donors discussing their donations. The organizers have set a goal to raise $100,000.

Brackmann is the NYT best-selling author of the Ellie McEnroe trilogy (Rock Paper Tiger, Hour of the Rat, Dragon Day), and suspense novels Getaway, Go-Between and Black Swan Rising. When she isn’t writing, she’s playing bass guitar, rooting for the San Diego Padres from her home in Humboldt County and servicing the every need of her two demanding cats. Zoo history

Gretchen Ziegler, former director of the Sequoia Park Zoo, will be giving a presentation on the history of the zoo on Saturday from 2 to 3:30 pm in Nealis Hall at the Clarke Historical Museum, 240 E St., Eureka. (Note, this lecture was postponed from its original date on Sept. 17).

Ziegler began working at Sequoia Park Zoo in 1995 as head keeper. She eventually became the curator and then the zoo director for 14 years. She’s currently retired, occupying her time volunteering with the Eureka Sequoia Garden Club and Redwood Coast Village and remodeling her backyard garden .

The presentation is free to attend and will also be live-streamed and recorded for those of you who can’t make it in person. Email dana.f@clarkemuseum.org to receive the link, which will be available a few days before the event.

lake cleanup

A Ruth Lake cleanup is slated for Saturday from 9 am to 2 pm

Volunteers will meet at the Ruth Lake Marina, 8990 Mad River Road at Mad River, at 9 am and from there will split up and report to zone captains spread around the lake. Boats are welcome, but not required. All boats must be inspected at the marina for zebra and quagga mussels. Refreshments will be available at the end of the workday.

Marsh tour

The Redwood Region Audubon Society will present a free guided field trip at the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary on Saturday from 8:30 to 11 am

Bring binoculars and meet trip leader Cindy Moyer at the end of South I Street (Klopp Lake) in Arcata to enjoy easy to walk trails and a diverse range of shorebirds, songbirds, raptors and waders.

Wetlands workday

The Redwood Region Audubon Society will present a Wigi Wetlands Volunteer Workday on Saturday from 9 to 11 am

Volunteers will be working on removing seed heads, pulling invasive plants and picking up trash. A skilled equipment operator will also be on-site using an excavator to remove “old growth” plants and roots that we’ve subdued by hand.

Tour the marsh

Friends of the Arcata Marsh is sponsoring a free tour of the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary on Saturday.

Everyone will meet leader Sharon Levy at 2 pm in the lobby of the Interpretive Center on South G Street for a 90-minute, rain-or-shine walk focusing on marsh history, wastewater treatment, birds and/or ecology. Masks are recommended but not required inside the building, regardless of COVID-19 vaccination status. For more information, call 707-826-2359.

La Fiesta Santuario

La Fiesta Santuario will take place Saturday from noon to 4 pm at Jardin Santuario, 11th and F streets, Arcata.

La Fiesta Santuario will feature music by LBoogie, food from Los Giles and Mother’s Cooking, art celebration with Arcata Playhouse, a flea market, a silent auction, a collective art mural and more.

All proceeds from this event will go toward funding el Jardin Santuario (The Sanctuary Garden) in organizing its own safety and security measures after suffering two acts of targeted vandalism within one month. birding event

The Redwood Region Audubon Society and field trip leader Ken Burton will present an all-day exploration of the Titlow Hill/Forest Service Route 1 area on Sunday.

This area is Humboldt County’s premier montane birding locale but is not visited much at this time of year. Potential species of interest range from mountain quail and sooty grouse to white-headed woodpecker and Cassin’s finch. Everyone will meet in front of Pepper’s on Valley West Boulevard in Arcata at 8 am to carpool or at the base of Titlow Hill Road at 8:45 am Contact Ken at 707-499-1146 or shrikethree@gmail.com for more information.

seabird event

The Redwood Region Audubon Society in partnership with a local guiding company, Kayak Trinidad, will present a morning viewing of local seabirds from a kayak on Sunday from 9 am to noon.

Everyone will ply the waters of Trinidad Bay with professional kayak guides seeking out marbled murrelets, pigeon guillemots, common murres and more.

Pancake breakfast

The Trinidad Lions Club will hold a pancake breakfast Sunday from 8 to 11 am at Trinidad School.

The menu includes pancakes, eggs and choice of ham or sausage or biscuits and gravy and eggs. Beverages are also included. The cost is $8 for adults and $4 for children, with proceeds supporting school and community activities.

Jujitsu classes

The city of Arcata Recreation Division offers jujitsu classes led by instructor Matt Olsen.

Dan Zan Ryu jujitsu is a traditional Japanese/Hawaiian system composed of locks and escapes, striking, judo style throws and groundwork. The art lends itself readily to practical self-defense on a basic and advanced level. This class emphasizes physical conditioning, character development and community.

Classes are held at the Judo Hut, 800 F St. in Arcata every Monday and the first and third Wednesdays of each month from 7 to 8:30 pm Classes are for ages 14 and older. Monthly fees are $30 for Arcata residents or $42.50 for non-residents. The drop-in rate is $7 per class. Family discounts are available.

Weekly bingo

Bingo games are played every Tuesday at the Moose Lodge, 4328 Campton Road, Eureka. Doors open at 5 pm and games start at 6 pm A snack bar is available.

Flea Art

Trinidad Flea Art will take place on the first Saturday of the month starting Oct. 1 from 11 am to 3 pm at Trinidad Town Hall, 409 Trinity St. There will be high quality flea market items, art made by local artisans and live music. For more information or to be a vendor, call 707-834-8720.

Oktoberfest meal

The Rotary Club of Arcata Sunrise will host an Oktoberfest meal on Oct. 1.

The meal includes two bratwursts, German-style potato salad, sauerkraut, a large soft pretzel and homemade black forest truffles for dessert at a cost of $25 per meal. There are no vegan or vegetarian options. To-go Griffin signature drinks or beer are available if ordered in advance with meals.

Meals and drinks must be pre-ordered at www.arcatasunrise.org and will be available for pick up between 3 and 5 pm on Oct. 1 at the Griffin on 10th Street in Arcata between I and J streets. Proof of being 21 years of age will be required to pick up drinks.

Funds raised will support local projects such as Food for People, water catchment systems for school gardens, internships for transitional aged youth, scholarships to graduating seniors at Arcata High School, and international projects, including building schools in Pakistan and youth exchange opportunities.
