Kisumu town, is the capital of Nyanza province, Kenya, and lies on the northeastern shore of Lake Victoria.

It is the commercial, industrial, and transportation center of western Kenya, serving a hinterland populated by almost four million people.

Kisumu is an important link in the trade route between Lake Victoria and Mombasa because of its water and rail connections.

It is also the chief terminus for the agricultural produce of Nyanza and Western provinces. Industries are centered on processing agricultural products, brewing, and textile manufacturing.

As more people move from a rural setting to an urban location, more land has been freed for agricultural production in Kisumu county.

Agriculture plays a major role in the economic growth and development of the County, contributing 47 percent to household income.

Crops that do well in the region include maize, beans, sorghum, rice, cassava, finger millet, potatoes, and sugarcane among others.

Agriculture provides an urgent solution to the problem of unemployment in the region.
