Gray, Lawson to Commence Play at FIBA World Cup


DURHAM – Former Duke women’s basketball standout Chelsea Gray, current Duke women’s basketball head coach Kara Lawson and the US Women’s National Team begin their quest for a fourth consecutive FIBA ​​Women’s World Cup Wednesday evening as Team USA opens group play against Belgium at 9:30 pm ET on ESPN+.

Lawson will serve as an assistant coach for the 2022 USA Basketball Women’s National Team on head coach Cheryl Reeve’s staff. Gray, who recently helped lead the Las Vegas Aces to its first WNBA Championship while earning WNBA Finals MVP honors in the process, will join a 12-player roster that features six athletes who have claimed a combined 12 Olympic (5-on-5, 3×3) and FIBA ​​World Cup (5-on-5) gold medals.

Along with Gray, the US Women’s National Team includes Ariel Atkins (Washington Mystics), Shakira Austin (Mystics), Kahleah Copper (Chicago Sky), Sabrina Ionescu (New York Liberty), Brionna Jones (Connecticut Sun), Betnijah Laney (Liberty) , Jewell Loyd (Seattle Storm), Kelsey Plum (Aces), Alyssa Thomas (Sun), Breanna Stewart (Storm) and A’ja Wilson (Aces).

Following the matchup with Belgium, Team USA continues the group phase of play with games against Puerto Rico (Sept. 22), China (Sept. 24), Korea (Sept. 26) and Bosnia & Herzegovina (BIH) (Sept. 27) . All games during group play will be broadcast on the ESPN family of networks.

Quarterfinal action commences the final phase on Sept. 29, with the semifinals (Sept. 30) and final (Oct. 1) to follow.

The USA, ranked No. 1 by FIBA, will begin the 19th World tournament with a 22-game winning streak. The last meeting against Belgium, the next-highest ranked team in Group A at No. 5, was a 93-77 victory in the 2018 semifinal.
