Grade three students enjoy a culture day learning about Diwali

Notre Dame Des Vallees School has recognized Diwali in past years but the cultural learning day had to be put on hold over the last couple of years due to the pandemic.

Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, is a Hindu religious festival, and yesterday, Monday, October 24, Madame Fouquereau’s grade three class had the opportunity to learn about and enjoy Diwali.

The class enjoyed traditional food, music, an art project, reading, educational videos, and games. The day was spent immersed in Indian culture.

Madame Fouquereau says, “We watched some videos to learn more about Diwali. We did some comparisons with Christmas in a Venn diagram. We made fireworks from play-doh, did a Bollywood tutorial, coloured mandala bookmarks, and drew henna tattoos. We listened to the story of Rama and Sita. We made Rangoli with coloured sand and rice and finally we made thank you cards. The children made lanterns last week to decorate the classroom.”

This year the school tried something a little different, Kirsty Chambers, a parent volunteer says, “This is the first time we thought would reach out to the community and one of the local restaurants. I’m sure there are kids that have tried Indian restaurants. food before, but what a great way to get them to give it a go.”

Chambers says thanks to the generosity of Jag Thind and his restaurant, Mehtab East Indian Cuisine, the students enjoyed a lunch of Indian traditional food. There was enough food donated for the entire class to enjoy chicken and vegetarian dishes with rice and naan.
