Day 6 Results, highlights, and livestream from the Olympic qualifier

It was a day of both joy and heartbreak on day 6 at the 2022 ISA World Surfing Games.

Some well-known faces were eliminated from the competition, like Tsuzuki Amuro (JPN), Griffin Colapinto (USA), Cherif Fall (SEN), and Frederico Morais (POR). Others will have another day of navigating swell tomorrow (Friday 23) at Huntington Beach, California.

The picture is slowly becoming clearer on who could take the first two Paris 2024 quota spots, one for each national team per gender.

In the men’s, Brazil is the front runner followed closely in points by the USA and then Japan.

Australia and France are sitting top of the table in the women’s points standings, with Portugal and USA just behind.

This only adds to the excitement of the event which you can get up to speed on below.

You can also catch the action live on Olympics.com.

Moment of the day: Friends in the water

Surfers hit the water at 7:30 PDT and by the second heat of the day a few friends had joined the line-up.

Dolphins swam into the competition area when Cherif Fall (SEN) Jhony Corzo (MEX) and Murakami Shun (JPN) were in action and decided to stick around for most of the day, dipping in and out of the field of play.

While there was no interference, the mammals were clearly interested and enjoying playing in the swell on offer.

For fans on the beach, it was a pleasant and welcomed addition to the day.

As it happened: Day five at 2022 ISA World Surfing Games

There was no shortage of entertainment with the likes of Teresa Bonvalot (POR) and Dominic Barona (ECU) in some impressive paddle battles in round 4, heat 2. Bonvalot just got the better of her opponent and she followed Pauline Ado (FRA) into the next round.

Notable mentions need to be made for Alys Burton (GBR), Daniella Rosas (PER) and Sophie McCulloch (AUS) who got the highest single-wave score (8.50). China’s Yang Siqi also ended her run in the event which was her first-ever competition. At just 13 she made it through to repechage 5 meaning she finished 29th, the highest a Chinese athlete has ever finished in an international surfing competition.

In the men’s event, Lucca Mesinas (PER) had the crowd making noise early in the morning with a stellar 9.57-point ride. This was the highest single-wave score of the entire competition. Behind him, Joshua Burke (BAR) scored a tidy 9.23 and Jackson Baker (AUS) 8.83.
