‘Africa’ house with exotic design becomes major landmark in Piravom | Lifestyle Decor

The people of Piravom call this unique house, owned by Kochi native Wilkinson, ‘Africa’ house. Wilkinson and family have been settled in Tanzania for quite some time. He works in the hospitality sector in the African nation. Meanwhile, his wife is a social worker there.

The family had been dreaming to own a house of their own in their homeland. So, Wilkinson decided to build a beautiful house in his ancestral property. He wanted his brand-new house to reflect the unique cultural and architectural identities of the African country where they have been living. Soon, the house became a major landmark in Piravom and people aptly named it the ‘Africa’ house.

The high ceiling, which is a special feature of the tribal homes in Africa could be seen in this house too. As this is similar to the traditional architectural style of Kerala, the elevation may look traditional. Roofing tiles have been paved on GI truss roof . Interestingly, the house dons unique looks from both sides. Besides the main entrance door, a side door from the car porch too opens into the interiors.

The interiors mostly don earthy shades that add a rustic charm to the spaces. The walls are highlighted with exposed bricks. Interestingly, paintings brought from Africa adorn the interior walls.

A beautiful courtyard is the highlight of the interiors. This is a few metres below the floor level. Lots of natural light enter the house through the skylight ceiling here. The courtyard wall, meanwhile, has been turned into a prayer area cum library. Pillars with rock texture designs instantly attracting attention. Meanwhile, the living and the dining areas have been arranged around this courtyard.

Privacy has been ensured even while arranging the interiors in the open style. The partition wall in the formal living is a perfect example of this. Similarly, the kitchen too has been separated by a wall with a counter opening to the dining area.
