UPDATE / The road has now reopened, as of 5pm on Friday November 20.

The N52 north Ardee is expected to be closed for a “number of hours” Gardai say, after a major oil spill at the Mapastown Bridge between the mid-Louth town and Dundalk.

Gardai remain at the scene after a lorry overturned shortly after 1pm on Friday afternoon, reading to a considerable oil spill on the road approximately 4km outside of Ardee town.

At 4pm, Gardai said they expected the road to be closed for a “number of hours” yet.

They are advising motorists that there are heavy delays in the area and alternate routes may have to be considered.

Mapastown Bridge is located just south of the junction for Tallanstown and Castlebellingham, a short distance from Darver Castle in Readypenny.
