Three Louth-based basketball players have been included as part of a 16-man panel for the Basketball Ireland Under 18 squad that will move forward as preparations ramp up for this summer’s European Championship.
Danas Smigelskis of O Fiach College and Dundalk Ravens, Denzel Ebose of DCU and Drogheda Wolves and Wede Esajobar of St. Olivers and Drogheda Wolves are the three locally based players selected. All three will be keen to impress over the next number of months as that 16 will be whittled down to a final 12 for the tournament in Konya, Turkey.
Paul Kelleher, the Ireland Under 18 Head Coach, revealed his 16-strong squad on Monday and said he was thrilled with the depth available to him.
“I don’t think we have ever had a squad this deep for as long as we have for this group of young men. It is a testament to the entire squad of players, their clubs and schools that we have such a depth of talent for this generation.
“We could have a number of players who were not selected to move forward with the programme, but could just as easily have been selected to the 16 players. We are now in a privileged situation for the second year in a row, where we have the majority of our players significantly involved at Super League level and this can only benefit us for the future.”
