Preparations are underway for the third annual Darkness Into Light event in Ardee which will be held on Saturday May 9.
The first committee meeting of 2020 was held at the DeeHub in Ardee on Wednesday evening (February 19) where organisers made the first steps towards putting on another edition of the popular event which has received tremendous support from around the community since the first walk in 2020.
The Darkness Into Light Ardee will officially launch on March 4 while a number of registration evenings will take place in the DeeHub on Market Street, Ardee to allow for cash sales and offer assistance for anyone who will need it with online registration. Early Bird registration opens on February 25.
The committee are also asking any local businesses who may will be willing to sponsor beverages and refreshments for the event itself or would be willing to offer any other services to please contact the committee via [email protected] or on 086 059 1614.
Additionally, any volunteers who are willing to help with the organising of the event in the weeks and months leading up to May 9 – or on the morning of the walk itself – are also asked to get in touch.
The walk is aimed at encouraging people to talk about suicide and mental health issues. It is estimated that 500 people die by suicide each year in Ireland. Funds raised annually go towards suicide prevention charity Pieta House and their counselling services provided to those in suicidal crisis, people who self-harm and anyone bereaved by suicide.
As recently as 2017, 400 suicides were registered in Ireland. Men accounted for almost 80% of that number.
Last year, the Ardee walk raised €27,716.96 for the charity while in 2018, the committee and volunteers raised a stunning €40,000 in total for Pieta House. For more information on Darkness Into Light Ardee, you can check out the Darkness Into Light Ardee Facebook page.
This year, as was the case in 2019, there will also be Darkness Into Light events in Dunleer, Drogheda and Dundalk.
