Independent TD Peter Fitzpatrick has joined forces with eight other TDs from around the country to form ‘The Regional Group’.
The group were established today, on the first day of the 33rd Dáil Éireann, following the decision by the chamber to establish a business committee to progress the day-to-day operation of parliamentary business.
The new group should not be confused with the Rural Independents Group, which comprises of among others Michael and Danny Healy-Rae.
The former Minister for Communications Denis Naughton will act as the group’s convener. The Regional Group will operate as a technical group in the Dail for speaking time and the scheduling of parliamentary business.
The Group, which also includes Aontu leader Peadar Toibin, is made up of Cathal Berry TD, Sean Canney TD, Noel Grealish TD, Michael Lowry TD, Verona Murphy TD and Matt Shanahan TD, as well as Naughton and Louth’s Fitzpatrick.
Fitzpatrick is one of four former Fine Gael TDs in The Regional Group – along with Naughton, Murphy and Lowry.
Fitzpatrick won the fifth seat in the General Election earlier this month, securing a third term in Dáil Éireann. The Louth GAA County Board chairman secured 10,779 total votes.
