Drogheda United will face UCD at United Park in the first round of the EA Sports Cup, after the draw for the competition was made today.
The Drogs will host UCD, who they will face in the SSE Airtricity League First Division this season after the Students relegation from the top tier last season, after the draw which included 12 teams.
The six winners of the ties will then join the 10 Premier Division sides in the hat for the second round of the tournament, won last season by Dundalk FC – courtesy of a penalty shootout victory over Derry City in final at the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium.
The first round games are scheduled for Monday March 9. Exact kick off times are yet to be confirmed.
The other ties in the draw are Cabinteely v Crumlin United, Galway United v Athlone Town, Longford Town v Cockhill Celtic, UCC v Cobh Ramblers and Wexford v Bray Wanderers.
Last season, Tim Clancy’s team went out in the first round courtesy of a 0-1 defeat to Cabinteely. Drogheda have not beaten a League of Ireland team in the EA Sports Cup since 2013. In that time, they have only tasted victory against non-league Crumlin United and St Mochtas.
Drogheda United begin their 2020 SSE Airtricity League First Division campaign away to Cobh Ramblers on Saturday evening.
