Dundalk’s Caolan Rafferty was the best place international player at the South African Stroke Play in Johannesburg this week, earning a third place finish with a five under par final round.
Rafferty finished on -15 for the tournament after his final round 67, consisting of six birdies and one bogey. South Africa’s Casey Jarvis, just 16 years, six months and seven days old, won the tournament on with a sensational -25.
Rafferty, a semi-finalist in last year’s South African Amateur tournament, finished in third – just one shot off second placed Kyle de Beer who ended on -16.
In the third round, Rafferty went from tied in 21st to fourth in the overall standings, his round of eight birdies and one bogey seeing him end the day with a -10. Another strong showing on Thursday saw him secure his third place.
The Irishman had come into the tournament fresh from finishing tied for sixth at the African Amateur at Leopard Creek. He scored two over par on the final day to end on +3.
