An Garda Siochana have announced that an additional 15 safety camera zones will be in operation in Louth as of next Monday (February 17), bringing the total number of zones in the county to 31.
On Monday this week, the Gardai revealed the locations for the new zones where cameras will be situated with all zones deemed ‘high risk’ via a review. Gardai say that nationally 575 cameras have been removed, also following a review.
Of the 15 new locations to be covered by the safety cameras in the county, they include four new locations along the R132 where minor collisions are especially prevalent, bringing the total number of safety camera zones on that road to six.
A number of regional roads – the R167, R170, R171, R172, two spots on the R173, R177 and R178 are covered.
An additional zone has been added along the M1 in the county.
No additional safety zones have been added to the two already in place along the N2, within the Louth boundary with two fatal, four serious and five minor collisions on that road in the years according to the data provided by An Garda Siochana, which covered January 2016 and December 2018.
Safety cameras operate in areas where there is a history of speed related collisions, known as speed enforcement zones, using a fleet of marked vehicles. An Garda Siochana say that road deaths have decreased from 415 in 2000 to 148 in 2019.
