Man (20) remains in custody over Dundalk ‘samurai sword’ attack

A 20-year-old man remains in Garda custody today in relation to an incident on Saturday afternoon when a teenager was seriously injured in Dundalk.

The incident occurred at approximately 2.10pm on Saturday afternoon at a house in the Castleross estate on the Castletown Road in the town.


Gardai responded and found a 16-year-old youth who suffered serious injuries. It is understood the youth sustained a number of lacerations when he was assaulted by a male intruder armed with what is described as a Samurai sword.

The injured teenager was taken by Ambulance to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda. His injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

A 20-year-old man was arrested a short time later by investigating Gardaí and is was detained for questioning under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

He remains in Garda custody, as of 3.30pm on Sunday afternoon. Gardai can detain a person for a maximum period of 24 hours before they must be charged or released. That period can be extended by a further 24 hours, pending sign-off from ranking Garda.
