An attempt to steal the Bank of Ireland ATM on Main Street, Dunleer was partially thwarted overnight when members of An Garda Siochana interrupted a raid in the early hours.

Members of An Garda Síochána attached to the Garda Armed Support unit intercepted the attempted theft at approximately 4.30am on Wednesday morning.

Gardai were patrolling the area at the time and managed to intercept the attempted theft. Subsequently, a pursuit ensued onto the N1 in which the culprits made their way over the border. Gardai say the PSNI are now assisting An Garda Síochána in their searches.

No injuries were reported during this morning’s incident. The investigation is ongoing.

The raid in Dunleer is the second such raid on that ATM in the last two months. In December, an attempted theft of the Ulster Bank ATM on Irish Street in Ardee took place.

The digger used in Dunleer remains in place and some diversions are in place. Photos show a considerable amount of external damage as caused to the front of the Bank of Ireland premises.
