A taxi driver has been taken to hospital in Drogheda tonight after he was injured in a shooting incident during rush hour in one of the busiest traffic areas in the town.

Gardai are currently at the scene on the Bridge of Peace in the centre of the town where an incident occurred shortly after 6.20pm. A number of shots were fired at a taxi and the driver, a man believed to be in his 30s, was injured. It is understood the shots were fired from another car.

The injured man was removed by ambulance to the nearby Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital where his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

The Bridge of Peace is currently closed to traffic in both directions and local diversions are in place. Motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible.

Gardai say investigations into the incident are ongoing. Drogheda Garda Station is located approximately 60 metres from the Bridge of Peace.
