30 riders took to the roads and streets of Ardee last week for the Cuchulainn Cycling Club annual New Year’s Eve Time Trial, with Irish Paralympic cyclist Ronan Grimes leading the way on the day with a sub-19 minute circuit.

A mild day greeted the riders in mid-Louth where the participants undertook the route across the Ardee Link Road and back, at just over 14m. Grimes’ time of 18:38 was the fastest on the day and he was the only rider to complete the circuit in under 19 minutes.

The Orwell Wheeler’s cyclist is due to compete in his first Paralympic Games in Tokyo in August, having already collected medals on the world circuit throughout the last 12 months. He first took part in the NYE Time Trial in 2018, when he finished second.

Last year’s winner Liam Dolan (Cuchulainn CC) came home in a time of 19:04 with Ian Inglis of Blackrose Racing in third with a time of 19:39 clocked. A regular competitor in this particular event, Ian has now finished second and third but the top of the podium remains elusive for now.

The fastest lady on the day was Katie Reilly in a time of 24:41, just 15 seconds quicker than Ardee’s Claire Ludlow, with Johanna Rogan a further four seconds behind in third with a time of 25 minutes exactly.

In total 30 riders took part in the event, which included three of Cuchulainn Cycling Club’s underage riders, Llija Stevanic and sisters Rhiannon & Ffionn Dolan.
