Drogheda United boss Tim Clancy has made the first moves to build a squad capable of challenging for promotion back to the Premier Division next season – by re-signing three key men from the 2018 First Division campaign.
Midfielder Sean Brennan, left-back Conor Kane and striker Chris Lyons have all committed to the United Park side for the 2019 season.
The news comes just days after the club confirmed manager Clancy would be staying on to lead the team next year. The Trim native had been linked with the vacant manager’s position at Shelbourne.
Brennan scored 12 goals in 26 league appearances in 2018, including winners away to Shelbourne and Galway United in the regular season and a penalty against Shels in the play-off second leg victory at Tolka Park.
The locally born player (32) was selected in the PFAI First Division Team of the Year and having suffered relegations with the club in 2015 and 2017, he will be keen to earn a second promotion in three years to bring his hometown club back to the top flight.
Another Drog to fetaure in the PFAI XI was Conor Kane. The young left back celebrated his 20th birthday on Monday by signing a new one-year deal with the Boynesiders.
The Maynooth University student has made 49 league appearances in two seasons with the club and has impressed all with his mature performances in the United back four.
Chris Lyons will also return in 2019. The ex-UCD and Bohemians striker notched eight goals in his debut campaign for the club but caught the eye especially for his hard-working and tireless showings in the centre-forward position.
The 25-year-old scored the winner in August’s 1-0 win over Shamrock Rovers in the FAI Cup.
