Fine Gael councillor Dolores Minogue says residents in Campbells Park and Dawson’s Demesne have called for the installation of speed ramps in the estates.
Minogue says a number of residents in the areas made the request to her this week after a car chase involving a unit of the Gardai came through the quiet and narrow residential area last Saturday morning.
“This is the second such chase involving a Gardai car in this area,” she told ThisIsArdee.ie today. “Residents in both areas have raised their concerns with me about the safety of residents and would like to see some ramps in the area. There are huge concerns. It is quite an elderly estate and they want safety restrictions put in.
“The last chase ended in the footbridge linking Dawson’s Demesne and Tierney Street being badly damaged. It appears on both occasions it is lucky that no member of the public were in a serious accident. The latest incident was a very serious onea.”
In June 2015, a Garda car crashed into the walk bridge after a high speed chase involving a motorcycle. Having entered the estate after a lengthy chase, the motorbike mounted the bridge – itself very narrow – and crossed, leaving the Gardai in pursuit to lose control of the vehicle and crash.
Along with other estates in the town, there is a 30km per hour speed limit in place at Campbells Park and Dawsons Demesne.
