Square United bounced back from three straight league defeats in the North East Football League Division One this afternoon, as goals from Jonny Sheridan and Chris Kelly secured a big 2-0 away win over Kells-Blackwater.
The victory meant Tony Boyle’s side moved back to within three points of the league summit having slipped away from the early pace after three consecutive losses. Newly promoted Kells-Blackwater fell to their fourth defeat in five league outings.
Square’s strong start to the season brought wins over Johnstown and Rock Celtic and a draw against Trim Town which left them top of the table in it’s very formative stages. However, consecutive defeats against Enfield Celtic, Athboy Celtic and now Kentstown burst the bubble on early season optimism. A first away win of the season means it’s returned once again.
Last year, it took until January 29th for Square to rack up 10 points in the league action – now they’ve managed it before the end of September and the Ardee club will surely be optimistic they can enhance their prospects towards the top of the table going forward.
Sheridan was on the scoresheet in Square’s opening day win against Johnstown and the midfielder notched his second of the campaign to open the scoring on the hour mark at The Grange on Sunday afternoon. Kelly followed up his strike in last week’s 2-3 defeat to Kentstown with Square’s second 10 minutes later.
