Ardee Community School’s Kian Leavy has been named in the Republic of Ireland Under 16 squad for two friendly internationals with Romania.
The teenager moves up to Paul Osam’s Under 16 panel having previously played with Jason Donoghue’s Under 15s. The 18-man-squad will travel to Bucharest to face Romania twice – on Tuesday and Thursday next week (September 19th and 21st).
Leavy, who turned out for Manchester United in the recent NI Supercup, recently moved to St Patrick’s Athletic and he helped his new team’s Under 15s to a win in the Actavo Cup held by Cherry Orchard.
The attacking midfielder from Funshog scored in Pats win over Swansea in the opening round of the competition. He has also been heavily involved as St Pats have won their opening three games in the new SSE Airtricity League Under 15 league.
Speaking on his squad announcement today, Ireland Under 16 coach Osam – himself a Pats legend – said, “These are the first internationals for this age group this season so it’s our first time to work with them around a match situation.
“I obviously saw these players at Under 15 international level with Jason Donohue last year and there are a few new players at this level. It gives me an opportunity to see these players play and see how they gel with the group.
“Like any Eastern European nation, Romania will be a different challenge for our players. These games are all part of their education and we want them to be able to cope with different styles,” he continued.
