John Mitchels held their now annual 6K fundraiser on Sunday – and a big local crowd came out to support the club and charity partner for the 2017 event, the Irish Cancer Society.
Brian McCloskey of the North East Runners Club was the first man over the line in Ballybailie, coming home in a time of 20:26. He beat clubmate Peter Noone to first place by a considerable distance. Noone did the route in 23:06. Remarkably, this afternoon’s event was the second win of the day for McCloskey – having run and won the Rossin Rovers Heritage 5K earlier in the day. He ran that in 16:51.
Adrian Black had the honour of being first clubman home on a dense and warm day. He ran the course – which travelled down the N52 and back around to the Mitchels base via Riverstown Cross and Scrogganstown – in 23:11.
Kieron Breagy of the NER continued a good day for their club with his fourth place finish, ahead of locals Rory Durnin, Eamon Martin, Paul Breagy, Barry Kirk, Jack Stokes and Aaron Kane.
The first woman over the line was Arlene McArdle, who finished 12th overall with a time of 29:29. Katie Jennings, Marita Weldon and Noleen King followed soon after as the best place women.
Speaking after the event, Des Halpenny said, “Well done and congratulations to all the runners who took part in today’s event. I know the club are delighted with the turnout. All proceeds raised today will go towards the club and a very worthy cause, the Irish Cancer Society.
“It’s something that has touched most of us or our families at some stage of our lives so the funds will be much appreciated there. We’d like to thank our sponsors – Ardee Asphalt, John McCabe Nissan, Bord na Mona, Lidl and Precision Nutrition.”
