UPDATED: Three people have died in a three vehicle collision on the N2 north of Ardee.
Gardai say three women have died in the incident, with another two people critically injured. The incident happened shortly after 1am this morning south of Aclint bridge. Gardai say the N2 is expected to be closed for the rest of day as a Garda technical examination takes place.
A 39-year-old driver and two passengers, aged 37 and 69, died. Two men were critically injured and have been taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital.
RTE report that the three women and one of the men injured were believed to be travelling in the same car. The other injured man was travelling in the second car while occupants of a third car were not seriously hurt.
Gardai are diverting traffic in Ardee at the Carrickmacross roundabout and in Carrickmacross onto the Dundalk Rd (R178). Motorists are advised that the diversion route will add considerably to their journey time this morning.
Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to contact Ardee Garda Station on 041 687 113 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1 800 666 111.
