Alan Mackin has been named the first ever Integral Fitness & Leisure Louth GAA Championship Player of the Week.

Around 450 players from 26 teams took part in the opening round of the Championship over four days last weekend, but the John Mitchels back was named the best player of the round after a public vote on social media.

Mackin beat off competition from Newtown Blues’ Andy McDonnell and Naomh Fionnbarra’s William Woods to win the prize. Mackin egded the Twitter vote with 41% of the total 333 votes. That was enough to claim the win over inter-county man McDonnell who edged the Facebook vote by six.

The 35-year-old helped John Mitchels to a stunning 2-6 to 0-06 point win over local rivals Sean McDermotts on Friday evening. He excelled in the full back line for the Ballybailie men, helping them to a total shutout of the Seans in the first half and providing the forwards with the platform to shoot the Mitchels to victory.

They will look to secure their place in the quarter-finals on Thursday evening when they face the other Group 4 opening day winners – Westerns GFC.
