Ardee author Ruth Fitzmaurice officially launched her memoir I Found My Tribe at Dublin’s Lighthouse Cinema on Monday evening – and continued her hectic media tour today by appearing on the popular ITV daytime show This Morning.

Ruth, who grew up in Ardee but now lives in Greystones with her husband Simon and five children, wrote the book to detail her life dealing with Simon’s Motor Neurone Disease diagnosis. Writer and film director Simon was first diagnosed in 2008 and given three to four years to live – but he continues to live in the family home with Ruth and their four boys and one girl.

I Found My Tribe finds Ruth explaining what life is like in her most unique situation and how her family and swimming in the Irish Sea with her friends – they call themselves The Tragic Wives Swimming Club – keeps her an escape and a release from day to day.

On Monday, friends, family and figures from the literary and media world descended on the Lighthouse Cinema in Smithfield for the official launch of Ruth’s book. Among those in attendance were Ruth’s parents David and Pat, as well as TV presenter and writer Maya Dunphy and Roising Ingle of The Irish Times. Published by Vintage, the book went on sale in shops and online last Thursday.

Speaking at the event, Ingle said, “To read this book is to fall in love with Ruth Fitzmaurice – an extraordinarily gifted and beautiful human being.”

I Found My Tribe is now the number one bestselling book in Ireland and Ruth celebrated that extraordinary achievement by appearing on ITV’s This Morning today, with Philip Schofield and Holly Willoughby.

Speaking about her children on the show, Ruth told the hosts, “Kids are great – they keep you in the moment. Hunter says ‘there should be a Mr Man called Mr Can’t Move.” Their Dad Simon’s movement is limited to his eyes only and he communicates through eye gaze technology.
