Ardee St Marys will meet Sean O’Mahony’s in a repeat of last year’s Senior Football Championship final on Saturday with a win vital to the Marys’ hopes of progress from the group stages of this year’s Championship.

The Ardee men got their campaign underway on Saturday evening but were held to a draw by St Josephs, despite holding a six point first half lead. They lead by four at half-time but Alan Quigley’s late free levelled the game.

In the three team group, Saturday’s encounter will be the Marys final group stage match and a defeat could see their participation in the 2017 edition end ahead of the group’s final game between the Dundalk and Dromiskin based teams. Last October, the Marys contested their first senior championship final since 2003 but a late rally from the Sean O’Mahonys saw them run out 1-11 to 1-09 winners.

The Marys and the O’Mahonys clash at 7.30pm on Saturday (July 15th) in Dunleer. That game is the second clash in an IFC/SFC double header. The first game (throw-in 6pm) sees Hunterstown Rovers take on St Mochtas.

Like the Marys, Rovers are in a three team group and having beaten St Fechins on matchday one in the Intermediate Group 4, they will be hopeful of securing their passage against the side from Louth Village. Glen Mathews was the Rovers goalscorer on Friday night as they beat the Fechins 1-10 to 1-09.

Thursday night will see Group 4 of the Junior Football Championship continue. John Mitchels and Westerns – both fresh from wins on matchday one – face off against eachother in Stabannon. That match gets underway at 8.15pm, after the Sean McDermotts look to bounce back from their disappointing loss on Friday when they play Wolfe Tones. That starts at 7pm.

JFC favourites Glyde Rangers will play Naomh Malachi in Louth Village on Thursday evening while Stabannon Parnells have a week off with Glen Emmets and Cuchulainn Gaels playing eachother on the same evening.
