A couple of Ardee & District Athletic Club athletes were in the medals today on the first day of the Leinster Schools Track & Field Championships at Morton Stadium in Santry.
Representing Ardee Community School, Jonathan Commins threw 13.01m to win the boys Under 16 shot put, beating his nearest challenger by over 1.1 metres to comfortably lay claim to the gold medal. Jonathan also ran the 100m hurdles in the Intermediate Boys category in a time of 15.1 seconds, enough for a fifth place finish.
Fellow club member Aoibheann Carolan – who was at the event representing her school St Vincents, Dundalk – finished third in the minor girls shot put with a throw of 8.98, missing out on silver by 0.01m.
On Saturday, Ardee Community School will again be represented in Santry for day two of the championships, with Abbie Sheridan and Conor McMahon competing in the Girls Intermediate 1500m and the Senior Boys High Jump respectively.
