The annual Smarmore & District Community Alert Family Fun Run took place on a glorious, sun-kissed Bank Holiday Monday – and locals young and old hit the road to raise vital funds for the community.

Starting off at Ballapousta, the 6K route headed towards Shanlis and then back around through Hurlstone before arriving back at the school. There were prizes for the first home male, female and juvenile.

Derek Russell and James Russell were the first man and juvenile to finish the course while Bernie Balfe (pictured below) won the first prize in the female category.

After costs such as insurance and trophies were taken into consideration, the organisers raised €561 on the day which will as ever go towards Christmas hampers for the elderly and towards road safety improvements that the committee are working towards.

The organisers also took time out to thank the day’s raffle sponsors – Rose & Peter Taaffe of the Early Learning Centre, The Hunterstown Inn and Meade Potato Company  – as well as Durnin Fruit & Veg who kindly donated tasty refreshing oranges for those taking part.
