Nicola Bardon took her one millionth step of Lent on Saturday, ending her quest to raise money for the Irish Cancer Society in aid of he grandfather Matthew who died in 2015. For Nicola, it was apt her journey ended on home soil – on the Railway Line walk in Ardee.
Instead of giving something up this Lent, the journalist decided to set herself a unique challenge – walking 1,000,000 steps over the course of Lent to raise money for the charity. That averaged out at 21,276 steps daily – some feat, but one Nicola beat with just enough time to spare.
Having initially set out to raise €10 a day for each of the 47 days of Lent, Nicola was soon setting her sights higher and higher. Her EverydayHero page is still live and as of yesterday, she has raised over €2,750. That’s almost six times her original target. While that figure was continually rising, her eyes never left the prize – the big 1 million.
Writing on Instagram on Sunday, Nicola said, “Blown away by the support – can’t believe how much I’ve raised! People are so kind and generous – thanks to everyone who has donated or plans to.”
Speaking to ThisIsArdee.ie last month, Nicola told us that all about her reasons behind the unique fundraising drive and the feeling it gave her. “Every time I get a donation, it gives me such a good rush that I go out and do a good walk because I know somebody is putting their money towards this and it’s going to a good cause.”
She got a lot more donations than she expetced. That’s one hell of a rush – all for a good cause. Well done Nicola!
