Ardee Concert Band’s senior band was in Navan on Sunday for the 52nd annual IABCB National Bands Championships – and they finished second in the main competition, as well as taking home a prize for Best Brass Section.

Following on from last year’s ‘Best Own Choice’ award and the youth band’s double success in 2015, this time the senior group and their conductor Brendan Breslin won the ‘Best Brass Section’ award and also took home the second place award, having earned 138 out of 150 marks in total.

That tally beats last year’s score of 136 out of 150 – which was also enough to secure them second place. Pictured above is band chairman Dermot Murray receiving theBest Brass Section in Section 1 award from Colum Dunleavy.

Under the ever striving baton ofBreslin, the energetic and enthusiastic 51-strong band performed an own choice piece in Fribourg by Derek Bourgeois and a test piece – East Coast Pictures by Nigel Hess.

Receiving their score of 138 from the Competitions Adjudicator for the weekend Archie Hutchison, the band were delighted with the result and even more so with his comments. He noted how much Ardee were a band to admire with musicality and effectiveness throughout their pieces.

The band also scooped Best Brass Section at the Solstice Arts Centre to add to their ever growing trophy cabinet at their state-of-the-art bandroom at the Bohemian Centre on Ashwalk in Ardee.
