Book of condolence opens for Captain Mark Duffy

A book of condolence for Captain Mark Duffy and the crew of Irish Coast Guard Rescue 116 has been opened at Ardee Library.

Ardee Municipal District cathaoirleach Dolores Minogue was present at the library this morning to officially open and sign the book which is now available for visitors to sign during library opening hours.

The body of Captain Duffy was recovered from the wreckage of the Rescue 116 helicopter crash on Sunday. Crew members Paul Ormsby and Ciaran Smith remain missing.

Captain Dara Fitzpatrick was recovered from the sea shortly after the incident, which occured on Monday March 13th off the North Mayo coast, but died in hospital.

Chief Pilot Captain Duffy, 51, hailed from Dundalk but had been living in Blackrock near the town with his wife Hermione and two children Esmé and Fionn. He became a volunteer with the Irish Coast Guard at the turn of the century and had been piloting missions since 2002.

Previously, he worked with the Californian Coast Guard for several years whilst living in the United States.

Speaking to ThisIsArdee.ie today, Minogue expressed her sympathies with the the deceased’s family.

“I want to express my deepest sympathies to Mark’s family on his tragic loss. He was so highly thought of in his local community for his work with the Irish Coast Guard and to lose him – and his crew mates – in such tragic circumstances is devastating,” she said.

Captain Duffy’s funeral mass will take place on Thursday at 11am at St. Oliver Plunkett Church in Blackrock, followed by a private cremation. He will repose at his family home on Wednesday from 1pm to 7pm.

Mark is survived by his wife Hermione, children Esmé and Fionn, mother Sheila, brothers Gavan and Donard, stepfather Peter, sisters-in-law Annemarie and Sophie, uncles, aunts, nephews and many friends and colleagues.

Further books of condolence are open now open at Dundalk Garda Station, County Hall Dundalk and Dundalk Town Hall. Ardee Library is open today (Tuesday) from 10am to 1pm and 2pm to 8pm and tomorrow Wednesday from 10am to 1pm and 2pm to 5pm. Full opening times are available here.
