An 18-year-old man arrested on Thursday on suspicion of assualting a child causing serious injury has been released without charge.
The man was arrested at around 6pm in Dublin and was brought to Dundalk Garda Station for questioning. Gardai confirmed on Friday evening that the man has now been released. A file has been prepared for the DPP who will now decide whether charges are to be brought.
The baby girl remains in hospital in Dublin where her 16-year-old mother and family members maintain a vigil.
The infant suffered broken bones and a very serious head injury after the incident which is believed to have occured on Bridge Street in Ardee on Monday night. The two-and-a-half month old, born on New Years Eve, was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda before being later transferred to Dublin for specialist treatment.
Gardai were on Wednesday and Thursday investigating a number of lines of inquiry into the incident but the arrest was seen as a significant development in the case. Gardai were investigating whether or not the infant sustained her injuries from a fall. A technical examination had earlier been carried out at the baby’s home on Bridge Street in Ardee.
