Ardee will host a stage finish of this year’s 24 Marathons 24 Days event in aid of Spina Bidifa & Hydrocephalus – which will see marathon man Shane Finn run – you guessed it – 24 marathons in 24 days.

Three years ago, Kerry man Finn tested himself with what seemed at the time the ultimate endurance test – running 12 marathons in 12 days to raise money for the SBHI. In 2017, Finn is doubling his efforts quite literally.

This summer the 24-year-old from Dingle is running 24 marathons in 24 days for the very same cause – one close to his heart as his cousin Mary lives with both spina bifida hydrocephalus. And Shane will finish his eighth day and eighth marathon in Ardee.

The 24 Marathons 24 Days event will get underway on Thursday June 22nd in Bundoran Co. Donegal and ends 24 days later in Dingle – after 636 gruelling miles. Every day, Shane will run a marathon distance and on Thursday 29th of June he will finish his eighth marathon in Ardee.

That day he will start in Castleblayney and make his way to finish for the day in Ardee via Carrickmacross. The following morning, Shane will start day nine in Dundalk en route to Bettystown.

In 2014, Shane’s tremendous efforts for 12 Marathons 12 Days raised €31,640 for SBHI and this year, he’s aiming to raise a minimum of €100,000. He will be starting and stopping in towns across 24 counties over the duration of the event and he hopes that people get out and support his efforts for the very worthy cause.

SBHI Chairperson Peter Landy, who is from Ardee and who’s daughter Hannah lives with hydrocephalus, hopes that the town of Ardee can get out and support Shane when he ends his eighth marathon in the town.

“Over the years, we have always received great support from the people of Ardee through our church gate collections and street collections and we’re really hoping that people will come out and support Shane as he finishes the first third of his epic journey in Ardee.

“We’re also encouraging people to involve themselves in helping Shane reach their fundraising target of €100,000 – and they can do that in any number of ways – as long as it involves 24; eat 24 donuts, wash 24 cars or even fasting for 24 hours,” Peter told ThisIsArdee.ie.

There was no rest for Shane Finn over Christmas – as he hit the streets of Dingle for training.

At the launch of the event at Cork’s UCC Sports Mardyke Sports arena last month, Derval O’Rourke was on hand to offer her support to Shane’s marathon efforts.

“I’m really excited to support Shane on his mission to complete 24 marathons in 24 days,” she said. “I chatted to Shane a few months ago and was so inspired by his motivation to raise money and awareness for SBHI.

“He has taken his personal experience with his cousin Mary and used that to really make a difference in the lives of people living with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus. I love the idea of 24 marathons in 24 days and think it’s an amazing goal. Whilst most of us can only dream of such feats, we can all help in our own way with this great cause.”
