The draws have been made for the group stages of the 2017 Paddy Sheelan Cup and Kevin Mullen Shield, the counties’ club GAA early season cup tournament.
Before the league campaign kicks off in April, clubs will compete in the annual cup competitions – the draws of which were made in Darver on Monday evening.
Paddy Sheelan Cup holders Ardee St Marys will began the defence of their trophy this Sunday morning with a trip to Louth Village to face St Mochtas. The pair have been drawn in Group B that also contains Na Piarsaigh and Kilkerley Emmets.
The Blues impressed on their way to winning last year’s Paddy Sheelan Cup. They beat Cooley Kickhams by a mammoth score of 3-15 to 1-08 in the final.
In Group C of the PSC, Hunterstown Rovers will face Dundalk Gaels, Naomh Fionnbarra and Naomh Mairtin for the right to progress to the knockout stages. Rovers will welcome the Dundalk side to Pairc Baile Fiach on Sunday morning for the campaign opener.
Last season, Hunterstown made the final of the Paddy Sheelan Shield after their elimination from the cup competition but they lost out to the Newtown Blues in the secondary competition showpiece.
In the junior competition – the Kevin Mullen Shield – all three local sides began their 2017 seasons away from home on Sunday. John Mitchels will play Naomh Mairtin B, Sean McDermotts travel to Dunleer to face Lannleire while the Westerns will play Roche Emmets.
The Mitchels will also face a very tough proposition in St Kevins of Philipstown in the group stage, as well as Wolfe Tones. The Seans have been paired with Lannleire and Dowdallshill. The Westerns are also in a three team group with Roche and Stabannon Parnells.
