Gardai in Ardee are investigating after an attempt was made to attach a card skimming device onto an ATM in the town.
The incident occured at O’Gorman’s Centra supermarket on Castle Street in Ardee on Thursday last, February 2nd between 5pm and 5.30pm.
Two individuals entered the premises and attempted to attach the device – which can be used to read card details and use them again fraudulently – to the ATM in the store. The machine is located just to the side of one of the busy till areas.
Gardai say that the attempt to attach the device to the machine was unsuccessful and only later when damage to the machine was discovered were officers called.
Anyone who may have noticed anything suspicious in or around O’Gorman’s Supermarket last Thursday are asked to contact Ardee Garda Station on 041 685 3222.
Card skimming is when a customer’s card information and PIN are captured at an ATM and used to produce counterfeit cards for fraudulent cash withdrawals. In this case, the customer sees a normal transaction and retains the card – unaware any crime has taken place.
