Ardee Rugby Club got their 2017 Provincial Towns Seconds Cup campaign off to the most perfect start imaginable on Sunday afternoon courtesy of a 35-0 drubbing of Mullingar at Townparks.

On home soil, Ardee entered the first round of the J2 competition and easily saw off the challenge of the men from Mullingar with a result that fell just short of the biggest winning margin of the weekend.

Tries from Cathal Bradley, Shane Lennon, James Daly and two from Kevin McKeever were just rewards for Ardee dominance. Ben O’Brien reached double figures from the boot in the game with the 20-year-old again impressing with his kicking as the home team ran out comfortable winners.

Overall, the team can come away content with a fine team display and while they’ll be pleased to rack up five tries en route to a big win, no one should overlook a strong defensive performance that laid the foundations for this opening day win. If Ardee are to progress in the competition, they’ll hope to replicate their prolific form they showed on Sunday.

That will then be followed by the resumption of the club’s Leinster League Division 2B campaign. Ardee face Balbriggan at home on March 5th before ending their league business for the season away to Wexford Wanderers.
