Ardee duo win at Leinster Athletics Awards

Stars of Ardee Athletics past and present were awarded for their contributions to the sport last night, at the Leinster Athletics Star Awards in Carlow.

Current juvenile member and teenage star Jonathan Commins was honoured for his efforts in the last year as he was named the best male juvenile athlete in the county while Sean Callan, a member of the original Ferdia AC in the 1950s, was given an outstanding achievement award.

Taking place at the Four Seasons Hotel in Carlow, Jonathan got his hands on the award for Louth Juvenile Star 2016 for his acheivements in outdoor and indoor championships over the last 12 months. Among his triumphs, he won picked up gold in the 300m at the

In November, Commins picked up a certificate at the Athletics Louth County Star Awards for his acheivements in the AAI National Championship competition at Under 16 level. In 2016, he took home silver in the junior boys category at the Leinster Schools Combined events and won a national bronze medal in the U16 shot put back in July

At the Leinster Track and Field Championships, Jonathan finished first in U16 250m hurdles and second in shot too, earning silver. These are just a few of the events the youngster has excelled in while representing Ardee & District Athletics Club and Ardee Comunity School too.

Commins follows in the footsteps of clubmate Conor McMahon who picked up the Leinster Star award for Best Male Juvenile Athlete in Louth in 2015.

In a bygone era, long before Jonathan’s time, Sean Callan was a young star on the Ardee athletics scene. He joined the club back in the 1950s, when it was known as Ferdia AC, and was the first Louth man to win an All-Ireland title when he claimed the youth cross country championship. He also captured  Louth and Leinster titles on the way.

The outstanding local athlete of his time, his athletics career went from strength to strength. Now living in Dublin, Sean received an award from for his outstanding contribution to athletics at the ceremony on Saturday night.
