There’s plenty of Ardee interest in the upcoming Drogheda Independent Coca-Cola Sports Star of the Year awards which is to be held later this month – and at just 12 years of age, Eoin Rogers is among those angling for your votes.

The youngster, from Ballygowan in Ardee, has enjoyed a sensational last 12 months in competition – which included being named the newspaper’s Sports person of the month for May, leading to his chance to win the overall prize this month.

Aged just 11 at the time, he was the youngest ever victor at the Kings of Corstown event in Drumconrath and also claimed a third-successive All-Ireland Under-14 title early in the year.

In total, he has won five all-Ireland titles in his angling category within the last two years. A member of Carrickmacross Angling Club, he has been named Club Angler of the Year and Eoin has also been bestowed the honour of being chosen to represent Ireland at the Junior World Championship in August 2017.

Additionally, Eoin became the World Pairs Championship’ youngest ever competitor when he teamed up with his Dad Eamon at the tournament last September.

The voting is open to the public and in order to vote, you have to buy a copy of the Drogheda Independent or Mid-Louth Independent. Then, all you have to do is fill out the form with your choice and post it to the newspaper’s Shop Street offices in Drogheda.

The deadline for receiving votes is Thursday January 26th at 11am. Photocopies are not accepted – so you have to buy a newspaper to make one entry.

Here’s hoping Eoin can get enough votes to be crowed the winner at this month’s gala awards evening, which takes place at The Westcourt Hotel on Saturday January 28th. RTE Sport’s Michael Lyster will compere the evening. Tickets are now available from the Drogheda Independent office on Shop Street, Drogheda.

There could be even more local success on the night too – with several Ardee-based players involved with the 2016 Louth senior football panel that are in contention to win the Sports Team of the Year gong, and local archer Ann Marie Murray will compete with Eoin for the Sports Star of the Year gong. She was named February’s sports person of the month in 2016.
