Jonathan Commins of Ardee & District Athletics Club will receive a Leinster Athletics Star Award for his performances in 2016 at the Leinster Star Awards later this month.
The teenager has been named the best juvenile boys athlete in Louth for 2016 and is the only Ardee representative in highly competitive categories for juvenile girls and boys and senior women and men. He will receive the Louth Star Award alongside ten other male juvenile athletes – each representing a county in the province.
In November, Commins picked up a certificate at the Athletics Louth County Star Awards for his achievements in the AAI National Championship competition at Under 16 level. In 2016, he took home silver in the junior boys category at the Leinster Schools Combined events and won a national bronze medal in the U16 shot put back in July
At the Leinster Track and Field Championships, Jonathan finished first in U16 250m hurdles and second in shot too, earning silver. These are just a few of the events the youngster has excelled in while representing Ardee & District Athletics Club and Ardee Comunity School too.
Commins will be following in the footsteps of clubmate Conor McMahon who picked up the Leinster Star award for Best Male Juvenile Athlete in Louth in 2015. Last year, McMahon became the Leinster Indoor U16 long jump champion for the second year running and he won the U16 high jump at the Leinster Indoor Track and Field Championships. He also emerged victorious amongst a strong field to be named the Under 16 Leinster Combined Events champion.
The 2017 Leinster Star Awards will be held in the Seven Oaks Hotel, Carlow on Saturday the 21st of January 2017 at 7.30pm.
